The BP Volkswagen rally team campaigned a tough Sasol Rally on Friday and Saturday in Mpumalanga, emerging with their first S2000 podium place of the season after two gruelling days of competition. Hans Weijs Jnr and Bjorn Degandt rallied their BP Volkswagen Polo S2000 to third place in the event, round two of the South African national rally season. The pair put in a commanding performance to achieve third place in just their second ever event in South Africa – and with a BP Volkswagen Polo S2000 contesting just its second event.

The BP Volkswagen rally team contested round one of the 2012 SA National Rally Championship in KZN on Friday and Saturday. This event was the first outing for the brand new BP Volkswagen Polo S2000. Despite being the first rally of the season with a new car, the results produced painted a good picture for the rest of the year. The new BP Volkswagen Polo S2000 posted competitive stages times – and claimed stage wins in the process. "We are satisfied with the first rally performance," says Mike Rowe who heads Volkswagen Motorsport in South Africa.
"There is a long season ahead with many stages to go. We have found some things that need improvement and will be stronger in round two. The development cycle of the new BP Volkswagen Polo S2000 is on track and it won't be long before we have the pace and finishing capability we are aiming for. 

Na lange stilte wist Hans Weijs Jr gisteren iedereen te verrassen met het nieuws dat ook hij in zee is gegaan met Volkswagen. Waar zijn collega Abbring hem voorging richting WRC slaat Hans nu de weg in naar een wel heel bijzondere ervaringen en dat is het onder de uiteindelijke regie van het team uit Wolfsburg deelnemen aan het hoog aangeprezen Zuid Afrikaanse Rally Kampioenschap. Deze uit acht evenementen bestande serie werd vorig jaar nog gewonnen door de Zimbabwaanse matador Conrad Rautenbach.

Jongstleden zondag haalde Hans Weijs Sr samen met diens co-piloot Wim Vleugels tijdens de Twentse Euregio Short-rally, de laatste ronde van het Nederlandse Short Rally Kampioenschap, de felbegeerde titel binnen.Zonder een krimp te geven en met nul fouten op het rapport parkeerde Hans, de senior van de family, de door Hans Weijs Motorsport geprepareerde Citroën C2 S1600 op het Hengelose podium waarmee een glansrijk einde kwam aan een perfect verlopen seizoen. Bij aanvang van het seizoen zat Hans’ oude kompaan John Raven nog in de hotseat om nog een laatste jaartje samen te rijden. Maar om persoonlijke redenen zag John na de tweede shortrally in Emmeloord af van verdere deelname.
